JOB SUMMARY 
Contribute to the strategic direction of projects in DVS at EPDG, including contribution to scientific integrity and experimentation and planning project milestones. Collaborate closely with other technical leads across different functions and teams to achieve corporate and divisional goals.  Mentor scientists to develop upstream processes in support of product development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

•    Provide direction and understanding of the upstream aspects of the scientific programs at EPDG.
•    Provide mentoring to scientists to develop cell culture and fermentation processes for recombinant proteins and recombinant viruses in support of external customers for the CDMO business unit.
•    Collaborate across functions to build support the design and execution of experimental protocols for developing/optimizing manufacturing processes, process scale and technology transfer to manufacturing organizations within and outside Development Services.
•    Design and lead development of upstream processes and technical advancement for various projects.
•    Contribute to decisions/ recommendations for strategic scientific direction of projects.
•    Act as a representative to external and internal customers as a technical lead and subject matter expert.
•    Participate in report writing, business development, and any form of public presentations, as required for projects, including contribution to regulatory documents as projects move into the IND enabling stage.
•    Review and discuss experimental design and data.
•    Where appropriate lead, coach and develop a team of junior Scientists.
•    Prove project leadership with ability to delegate and generate enthusiasm to ensure timelines and goals are met.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS
•    Ph.D. or MS  degree with a minimum 8 years or 15 years, respectively, of related experience (may include post-doctoral) in biochemical engineering or equivalent required. Extensive knowledge of bioprocess unit operations.
•    Hands on experience using micro/mini-bioreactor systems, benchtop bioreactors, SUBs, centrifuges, cross flow filtration as well as scale up equipment suitable for Manufacturing.
•    Good knowledge of appropriate ICH, European and FDA based regulatory guidelines desired.
•    Understanding of Design of Experiments and knowledge of JMP software highly desirable. 
•    Strong familiarity of upstream fermentation and recovery as well as downstream formulation and analytical development.
•    Experience in mentoring junior scientists according to project timelines and milestones.
•    Ability to exercise independent judgment for solving highly complex problems using novel and creative solutions.
•    Experience in delivering technical reports, publications and presentations within a project or core functional area.
•    Proven ability to communicate experimental procedures and results through a variety of projects and group team meetings.
