The Director, Global Medical Affairs, Medical Countermeasures is responsible for providing scientific and clinical support for Emergent BioSolutions’ medical countermeasure (MCM) products/therapeutic area and for the development/implementation of activities with key opinion leaders (KOL)/external experts (EE) to drive important projects within Global Medical Affairs.
Essential Functions
- Leads efforts in recognizing and integrating substantive relationships with KOLs/EEs specific therapeutic areas of interest to Emergent BioSolutions, fosters the identification of key opportunities for scientific growth and medical evidence for the support and/or expansion of current approved therapies, and executes joint initiatives such as research, publication planning, and advisory board meetings.
- Provides scientific scrutiny of initiatives (i.e., publications, educational programs, and advisory boards) for assigned therapeutic areas and products to ensure information to scientific advisors, and government stakeholders is accurate, detailed, and balanced. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as a medical reviewer for materials deliverables to insure medical/scientific accuracy.
- Ability to work and/or experience with scientific support across government advisory including but not limited to US agencies such as; Health and Human Services, Department of Defence, Homeland Security, and other US public health responsible government agencies.
- Supports external scientific/medical communications including abstracts, posters, manuscripts as well as scientific presentations with the objective of enhancing Emergent’s thought leadership and to ensure that the scientific community is well versed in the science and therapeutic areas associated with Emergent’s products and scientific government stakeholder collaborations.
- Provides clinical training and leadership in proactive medical communications for intercompany collaborations; (e.g., teleconferences and clinical presentations) on therapeutic area disease states, Emergent’s products, and important relevant medical topics.
- Develops and manages educational deliverables to support Emergent BioSolutions’ products (e.g., advisory boards/roundtable meetings with KOLs/EEs, disease state backgrounders.
- Collaborates with the Sr. Director, Medical Affairs to prepare and manage the Medical Affairs budget.
- Maintains comprehensive medical/scientific knowledge of assigned therapeutic areas,disease states, and evolving clinical issues related to Emergent BioSolutions’ products, through literature surveillance and attendance at advisory boards and key medical/scientific congresses.
- Facilitates clinical presentations in a clear and effective manner to various government health and scientific audiences.
- Represents the medical/scientific perspective during respective cross-functional product planning strategy meetings.
- Represents the Medical Affairs department at key medical/scientific congresses.
- Responds to medical queries regarding use of Emergent BioSolutions’ products from healthcare professionals, government stakeholders and other scientific stakeholders in domestic and international markets.
- Undertakes ad hoc medical affairs projects as assigned by the Sr. Director, Medical Affairs.

Education, Experience & Skills
Education Requirements:
- MSc degree required; PharmD, MD or PhD degree preferred.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in medical science, medical affairs or clinical support activities, preferably in government public health threat preparedness.
- Experience in medical affairs activities tied to KOL/EE engagement.
- Experience in Medical Countermeasures Stockpiling and Government Public Health Preparedness, or Global public Health threats.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong patient and customer focus in daily activities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interface with individuals at all levels, both within Emergent BioSolutions and in the medical/scientific community.
- Strong awareness of compliance guidelines regarding advertising/promotional practices and interactions with healthcare professionals and government stakeholders.
- Maintains high level of productivity and innovation.
- Establishes appropriate priorities to achieve timely completion of assignments, while keeping expenditures within budget.
- Ability to work remotely.
- Ability to obtain USA Security Clearance
