Job Summary

 

The Laboratory Service Technician is a skilled position responsible for maintenance and calibration of lab instruments common in the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry. This role requires strong technical judgment, independent problem-solving, and leadership in cross-functional initiatives. This technician will work closely with vendors, Quality Control, Manufacturing, and Engineering teams while maintaining compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).

•    Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and calibrations of instrumentation, measurement, and recording devices used in Quality Control laboratories and Manufacturing—independently and reliably.
•    Diagnose and resolve malfunctions in analytical and stability testing environments to minimize downtime and ensure continuity of critical pharmaceutical testing operations.
•    Provide technical and mechanical support for all GMP and non-GMP utility systems, as needed.
•    Respond to emergency and alarm conditions, including participation in on-call rotations for emergency service calls.

 

Equipment Qualification & Documentation
•    Lead, execute, or support the qualification and requalification of laboratory and production instruments in accordance with established protocols and quality standards.
•    Develop and implement calibration specifications, protocols, and schedules.
•    Maintain accurate calibration and maintenance records to ensure full traceability and compliance with internal procedures.
•    Document all work performed in accordance with internal policies and Good Documentation Practices (GDPs).
•    Maintain SOPs and work instructions, including content development for new equipment.

Compliance & Investigations
•    Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for deviation investigations.
•    Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) for recurring equipment issues.
•    Support audits conducted by regulatory agencies and customers.
•    Participate in inspections of facility mechanical rooms, buildings, and grounds to ensure audit readiness and cleanliness.

Collaboration & Leadership
•    Collaborate closely with Quality, Engineering, and other stakeholders to resolve recurring issues and improve equipment reliability.
•    Communicate and coordinate with internal stakeholders and vendors to maintain service agreements and schedules.
•    Confidently act as facilitator, trainer, and team leader on repairs and projects.
•    Support affiliated Engineering or Maintenance departments as needed.

Continuous Improvement
•    Proactively identify areas for process improvements in maintenance workflows, documentation, and equipment performance.
•    Monitor and recommend best practices for equipment life cycle management and evolving technologies.
•    Assess and address gaps when best practices related to calibration and/or preventive maintenance are updated.

Education, Experience & Skills
•    Minimum of 6 years’ experience in maintenance, calibration functions, or a laboratory setting.
•    2-year trade vocational certification or equivalent hands on experience in a technical or scientific field.
•    Proficient in calibrating laboratory instruments and troubleshooting technical issues independently.
•    Experience with common quality control laboratory instrumentation such as chromatographs, pH/conductivity/density meters, moisture analyzers, and spectrometers.
•    Proven ability to diagnose and resolve equipment issues with minimal supervision.
•    Strong attention to detail in both documentation and execution of calibration and maintenance tasks.
•    Capable of performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
•    Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple instruments and issues simultaneously while coordinating with internal customers and lab schedules. 
•    Comfortable using computer systems for maintenance and calibration documentation.
•    Familiarity with building automation systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•    Ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
•    Customer service-oriented mindset with a strong focus on quality and compliance.
•    Prior experience in a cGMP or other regulated industry is strongly preferred.
